Can you smell it? The pumpkin spice is in the air! That means fall is here and it is time to unpack your chunky knitwear and hang Jack Skellington on the front porch. Your summer routines slowly start fizzling out as days get shorter and the autumn chill sets in.

But how will the changing seasons affect your hypothyroidism? Here are a few healing rituals you should consider this fall to help you better manage your Hashimoto’s symptoms, making the spooky season a little less scary.

Go Apple Picking

This quintessential fall activity is the perfect way to get into the outdoors and ground yourself in the healing environment of an apple orchard. Stroll through the rows of tees, heaving under the weight of juicy fruit, and pick a basket full of delicious and crunchy apples. The first obvious benefit is that you are enjoying the outdoors, breathing in fresh air, and taking it slow with a relaxing activity.

The bonus is that you get to go home with arms full of fresh, organic produce. What to do with all the apples you may ask? It is time to get your baker’s hat on and make some to-die-for gluten-free apple cinnamon muffins! Apples are a great fruit to eat to help you regulate your blood sugar and detox your system, but adding them into muffins helps you get that fall flavor you have been waiting all year for.

Spice Up Your Meditation

You can always make small changes to fall-ify your normal healing rituals. Meditation is an intricate part of holistic health as it helps you focus your thoughts, combat anxiety, and reduce stress levels. Without a healthy mind, you can forget about a fully healthy body.

Early morning outdoor meditation is not as much fun as it used to be in summer, but this is your time to change it up. Get yourself a pumpkin spice candle and engage your olfactory system during your meditation time. Let the calming scents lull you into a cozy space where you can clear your mind and find some peace.

Make a Healing Tea

Is there ever a bad time for tea? The answer is “no”! Introduce some fall flavors into your tea time and reap the benefits of this healing elixir. Chamomile tea is a tried and trusted anti-oxidant and helps ease digestive issues. Its calming aromas and delightful taste make it the perfect tea for a snug fall day.

Sage tea is another winner for fall. This tea is a mood booster with many holistic healing properties like lowering inflammation and keeping blood sugar levels stable. You can also indulge in some apple tea or add some cinnamon to your brew if you are feeling adventurous.

Peep Some Leaves

Fall is probably one of the most beautiful times of the year. The changing leaves paint the landscapes around us with vivid hues, bright red, yellow, and orange reminding us of the changing times.

This show-stopping spectacle is the perfect excuse to get into nature and switch off from the everyday grind. Find a nature walk in your local forest or state park that takes you deep into the felly of the fall foliage. Hear the crunch of the leaves underfoot and try to see some forest critters getting ready for winter. This outdoor activity is a guaranteed serotonin injection and offers you the chance for some light cardio while you are at it.

Try Some Bone Broth

This is a comforting, fall treat that you could be adding to your daily intake this fall. Bone broth is a wonderful addition to a Hashimoto’s diet with a long list of benefits thanks to its nutrient-rich nature. Along with collagen and amino acids, you will find zinc, calcium, magnesium, and potassium in your cup of broth.

Bone broth helps repair your gut lining which is vital if you suffer from intestinal permeability, a condition that can trigger your Hashimoto’s and other symptoms of your low thyroid levels. It also contains glycosaminoglycans (GAGs) that help build the lubricant around your joints, so wave goodbye to achy joints! Bone broth is healthy and hearty, everything you need in the fall.

Fall is one of my absolute favorite times of year. And with these cozy rituals, you'll be sure to stay healthy and revived all season long.
