How to Lose Weight with Hashimoto's

Oct 20, 2021

Losing weight with Hashimoto’s can be an extremely difficult, almost Herculean task. But there are a few things you can do to set yourself up for success.

One of the hardest points of my journey was seeing the number on the scale go up. In one day I gained 6lbs! It was distressing, made me even more apathetic, and I felt like I was never going to lose the weight… but eventually I did, and here’s how you can too.

Losing Weight with Hashimoto’s takes time

You may have other issues like adrenal fatigue or inflammation.

Be sure to have your doctor run labs to check for adrenal fatigue or inflammation markers. When I was at my sickest and gaining weight, my adrenals were shot and my body was extremely inflamed.

In order to heal and then lose the weight, I had to address both of these issues. For more information check out my guides “How to Heal Your Adrenals” & “How to Lower Inflammation”. Once you are managing both of these, you can begin to focus on exercise.

In terms of exercise, less is more

Many people believe that in order to lose weight you must exercise for long periods of time at a high intensity, when in fact, for us Hashimoto’s folk the exact opposite is true.

The key to losing weight with Hashimoto’s is light exercise such as yoga, pilates, barre or walking. Long periods of intense exercise can cause stress to your adrenal glands and will only prolong the healing process.

Aim for 20-30 minutes 5 days a week of light, restorative fitness activities.

Make Sure You Are Eating to Heal

If you are not feeding your body properly, losing weight with Hashimoto’s will be an uphill battle. I highly recommend trying AIP, Paleo, or at the very least going gluten free. Eat as little processed food as possible and fill up on lean protein like fish or chicken, leafy greens and good for you fats.

Losing weight with Hashimoto’s is possible. Although it took me 2 months, I was able to lose my Hashimoto’s weight and keep it off. If you’d like one on one help with achieving your health & fitness goals, book a free discovery call with me!
